Under the supervision of the ECG Lab Supervisor and the Department Manager, the Cardiology Technician II conducts and records electrocardiograms according to established procedures and is responsible for attaching and explaining the ambulatory cardiac monitors and their use to patients.  This includes instructing patients on the proper activity and record-keeping during the monitored period.  The Cardiology Technician II also processes ambulatory cardiac monitor tapes and transmissions, maintains patient data files, and assists the Supervisor in training of staff and implementing Department policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in research projects.

  • Assists Supervisor and Manager in the development of new policies and procedures for the department.

  • Assists Supervisor and Manager in the development of performance standards for ECG Tech staff.

  • Contacts Clinical Engineering as needed for assistance in rectifying equipment malfunctions.

  • Ensures that all computer equipment is in good working condition.

  • Explains computer analysis systems and/or processed data to faculty, house staff, fellows, and visitors.

  • Instructs patients on the use of event monitors and assists in interpretation.

  • Is responsible for computer processing of Holter tapes and event monitor transmissions: applies theoretical knowledge to identify and quantify recorded arrhythmias, checks accuracy of analysis occasionally interprets clinical results, responds to emergency calls.

  • Is responsible for each ECG taken on nursing units during scheduled shift (i.e., poor tracings, improper medical record number, etc.)

  • Maintains data files on monitored patients and on computer performance indices: records interpretations of Holters in log book; types, copies, and mails results to referring and interested physicians.

  • Maintains electrocardiogram machines, event monitors, and necessary supplies. Equipment maintenance includes: recharging batteries, cleaning and inspecting monitors on a daily basis, cleaning and inspecting play-back units on a daily basis, periodically evaluating computer and electrostatic printer/plotter for proper operation.

  • Prepares patients and assists physicians and stress test nurse when appropriate.

  • Provides training for other technicians.

  • Records cardiograms from hospital in-patients and out-patients b use of electrocardiogram machines, Holter monitors, and cardiac event monitors, according to department standards.

  • Records cardiograms, including editing and archiving tracings.  Provides training for other technicians.

  • Responsible for ECG Tracemaster system duties, including: prepares statistical reports to assist in tracking and monitoring activities, printing unconfirmed reports, weekly back-up of data.

  • Works with Lab Supervisor and Manager in establishing quality controls, collection of quality assurance data, and disseminating appropriate information to medical staff when necessary.

  • Works with other departments to ensure quality ECG service is maintained.

  • Works with software vendors to evaluate needs and obtain information related to systems updates.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Experience: One (1) year of directly related work experience

License/Certification: None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to interact appropriately with patients and other staff. This includes the use of good telephone skills when scheduling patients for various laboratory tests.

  • Ability to demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families and staff, including high volume and stressful situations.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Ability to problem-solve effectively using appropriate resources. Is productive in workflow, skills and organization.

  • Ability to provide care as needed and as described in the department’s policies and procedures.

  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job.

  • Knowledge of basic nursing and medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of cardiac monitoring methods, practices, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

  • Knowledge of protocols for patient records.

  • Knowledge of role in emergency response.

  • Skill in typing 40 words per minute.

  • Skill in use of monitoring equipment including, but not limited to, electrocardiogram (ECG) equipment.
