Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford is the heart and soul of Stanford Children’s Health. Nationally ranked and internationally recognized, our 311-bed hospital is devoted entirely to pediatrics and obstetrics. Our six centers of excellence provide comprehensive services and deep expertise in key obstetric and pediatric areas: brain & behavior, cancer, heart, pregnancy & newborn, pulmonary and transplant. We also provide an additional, wide range of services for babies, kids and pregnant moms
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Interpreter Services, conducts medical and general interpreting/translating for the patient care staff and for patients and their families. Acts as a cultural consultant to staff and as advocate for non-English speaking patients/families. Assesses and monitor their patient's understandings of the information conveyed and keeps physicians/nurses informed as to the level of that understanding. Suggests referrals to medical staff, clinical social workers, patient relation staff, chaplains, and ancillary staff. Records services provided in patient chart.
Translation of AVS documentation and proactive coordination of early discharges
Performs medical interpretation/translation for patients and their families, including in-group setting, such as family conferences.
Makes notations in the patient's chart indicating the origin of the request for interpretation or translation, the nature of the service provided (such as interpreting treatment orders or pharmacy instructions), and an assessment of the patient's understanding and level of acceptance of the information.
Translates correspondence, medical histories, medical consent forms, medical procedures and instructions, legal documents, manuals, brochures and other pertinent documents as necessary.
Assesses patient's/family's comprehension of "informed consent" as needed. Advises physician/patient care staff of any need for clarification.
Ensures access to hospital resources for non-English speaking patients and their families.
Triages crisis interventions for non-English speaking patients and families.
Conducts in-services and consultations relating to medical interpretation/ translation, health cultural practice or pertinent issues with medical and healthcare staff personnel, and appropriate hospital departments or committees.
Cooperates maintaining the quality of service by being flexible in providing coverage for vacation, sick leave, and emergencies.
Suggests referrals to medical staff, clinical social workers, patient relation, staff, chaplains, and ancillary staff for patients and/or families who could benefit from their assistance.
Trains doctors and hospital staff in protocol for accessing Interpreting Services.
Works with management to ensure ADA and national interpreter standards are met and complied with.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Bachelor's degree in a work-related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience;
Master’s degree in Interpretation/Translation or in a work-related field from an accredited college or university
National certification for Medical/Healthcare Interpreters preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must possess high verbal and written skills in both English and target language.
Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver
Ability to establish and maintain excellent client relationships, exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills and exercise sound judgment and professionalism in business and personnel matters
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Ability to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment

Knowledge of cultural and perceptual factors that may affect patient treatment and communication
