Job Summary

This paragraph summarizes the general nature, level and purpose of the job.

Assists in training and overseeing ultrasonography students during the clinical training portions of their programs. Maintains contact with clinical programs coordinator and the college representative as needed. When not teaching, responsible for the use and interpretation of ultrasound procedures, conducts sonographic procedures on assigned patients of all ages through the use of ultrasound diagnostic equipment. Performs vascular studies, including peripheral vascular, abdominal, liver and renal transplant scans as requested. Uses complex ultrasound equipment to perform Sonographic procedures. Does not supplant the physician in the sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis, but will assist in gathering sonographic, duplex and other medical data necessary to reach a medical diagnosis and decision. Shows a high degree of judgment and skill in use of sonographic equipment. Ensures that equipment is constantly functional and maintained for immediate use. Provides imaging guidance for physicians performing procedures.  Actively involved in department related research studies.  Participates in QI initiatives including developing and implementing protocols.  Provides onboarding and training for entry level sonographers.  Maintains records and reports on equipment, procedures performed and billing.  Oversees technical and ancillary personnel in assigned work areas/shift in the absence of the supervisor/manager.

 Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital’s policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

* Partially accountable for work product of others and functions as a group leader. Communicates instructions, assigns work to outers, monitors progress and workflow, establishes work standards, schedules work, and provides input into manager’s actions, including performance appraisals.

* Plans, develops and presents 2 study critiques for students per quarter.

* Prepares patient for exam, i.e. identifying oneself, explaining procedures, confirming patient ID and checking correctness of the order.

* Prepares room and equipment. Troubleshoots equipment failures and reports problems to the appropriate individual.

* Produces quality images following established departmental and QA (Quality Assurance) protocols to include technique, views, position, proper labeling and patient ID (Identification).

* Trains college students in clinical applications of theory and knowledge, including evaluating students and ensuring that applicable College and department policies and procedures are adhered to by all participants in the program. Works closely with Inpatient Director in regard to student progress and problems. Presents 2 study critiques for the students per quarter. Submits weekly observation/competency forms on students as requested.

* Works in a variety of diagnostic areas with knowledge of emergency and after hour’s procedures as needed.

* Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment, observes sound wave pattern produced, produces and processes diagnostic images and presents completed sonograms to physician.

* Participates in maintaining records for research cases. Participates as needed in evaluation of new equipment for research or possible future use in department.

* Performs a variety of complex sonographic procedures utilizing ultrasonic high frequency sound waves to detect abnormalities including masses, abscesses, and stones.

* Performs appropriate infection prevention techniques

* Performs proper probe handling & cleaning according to procedures if necessary.

* Performs basic Doppler scans, (i.e., hepatic/portal veins, hepatic art, venous Doppler studies, renal transplant art/v. Doppler within allotted time frames)

* Reviews patient medical history in chart information system. Reloads prior exams for comparison. Utilizes ancillary equipment appropriately (PACS - Picture Archiving and Communication systems).

* Spots check exams for required views and adequate demonstration of anatomy. Completes exam within required timeframe.


 Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

* Education: Requirement met by License/Certification Requirement.

* Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.

* License/Certification: Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) (AB) -and- two (2) additional Registries. i.e (RVT), (MSKS), (OB), (BR) (NE)   -and- Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Pediatric Sonography (PS)

 Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

* Ability to troubleshoot the equipment including RIS, PACS as well as US equipment.

* Ability to troubleshoot, document and communicate equipment problems.

* Ability to work effectively as a team player.

* Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and congenital/acquired pathology as they relate to the use and interpretation of ultrasound diagnostic procedures.

* Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

* Knowledge of Imaging processes and fluoroscopic techniques, methods and equipment.

* Knowledge of methods of positioning patients for Ultrasound procedures.

* Knowledge of principles of image processing and development applicable to diagnostic imaging.

* Knowledge of safety principles and procedures related to ultrasound procedures and equipment.
