1.0 FTE, Day shift

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford is the heart and soul of Stanford Children’s Health. Nationally ranked and internationally recognized, our 311-bed hospital is devoted entirely to pediatrics and obstetrics. Our six centers of excellence provide comprehensive services and deep expertise in key obstetric and pediatric areas: brain & behavior, cancer, heart, pregnancy & newborn, pulmonary and transplant. We also provide an additional, wide range of services for babies, kids and pregnant moms.

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice. Work performed in accordance with physician orders. Defined duties are performed in neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations. Perform all essential functions required of a Respiratory Care Practitioner level I.

Essential Functions

*Spirometry (FVC, SVC, MVV)

*Respiratory mechanics (MIP/MEP)(PK Cough Flow)

*Assisting with Bronchial provocation studies (Cold air, Exercise, Methacholine)

*Assist with Esophageal pH/impedance probe study

*Assist with performing Hypoxic challenge test

*Six-minute walk

*Actigraphy activity level monitoring

*Patient training/education

*Airway clearance training (ACT), specifically oscillating positive expiratory pressure (OPEP) therapy systems, CPT, and postural drainage

*Metered-dose inhaler (with spacer) training for patients of all ages

*Positive airway pressure mask fitting/acclimation training (CPAP and bi-level)

*Sputum Induction

*Oxygen Ventilation Study

*Pentamadine aerosol treatments

*Assist with Apnea studies

*Overnight pulse oximetry

* Maintenance and calibration of PFT/Spirometry equipment

*Assist with preparation Methacholine solutions for Methacholine Challenge procedures

*Assist with Indirect Calorimetry /Metabolic studies

* Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge by performing routine and complex procedures utilizing instrumentation and manual methods

* Maintain a clean and safe environment for testing

* Follow cleaning & disinfecting policies

* Assist staff assistants with preparation of PFT reports on Breeze

* Assist with orientation and training of Level I therapists and respiratory therapy students

*Must possess strong analytical and organizational abilities necessary to perform multiple diagnostic tasks.
 

*Must be able to prioritize multiple responsibilities encompassed within the position. Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department

* Demonstrates proficiency in all technical and interpersonal competencies as determined by PFT lab leadership.

* Complete orientations in all areas of Pulmonary Function Diagnostic Services based on education

* Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders.

* Provides education for patients/families and other members of the health care team

* Interprets data and responds to optimize clinical objectives for patients

* Responds to emergencies in service areas

Minimum Qualifications

* Education: Completion of a CoARC approved respiratory care program

* Experience: Two (2) years of experience as an RCP in an acute care facility or 1 year of PFT experience preferred

* License/Certification: BLS - Certified in Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association

NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program

-AND-

PALS - Pediatric Advanced Live Support

-AND-

RCP - Respiratory Therapy License from the State of California

-AND-

RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver.

• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the safe and effective performance of the job.

• Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

• Knowledge of Medical Terminology.

• Knowledge of new technologies (in specific field) and maintain and stay abreast of updates and changes.

• Knowledge of the indications, contraindications, and hazards of continuous long-term or short term mechanical ventilation, various respiratory therapy techniques, and anatomy, physiology and pathology related to the respiratory system required.
