Job Summary

Develop, implement and administer media relations outreach and communications in support of increasing the awareness and reputation of the hospital's people, programs, research and services. Serve as an advisor to newsmakers in the development of strategies and responses in situation-specific communications. Manage contacts and metrics in order to best target outreach and determine value. Serve as a hospital spokesperson as needed, both in routine and emergency communications. Collaborate with Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Stanford School of Medicine, and the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health as needed.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

•    Effectively research, write and promote hospital news stories, ideas and press releases to traditional media, social media and New Media outlets.

•    Uses established and emerging tactics to maximize media coverage for hospital.

•    Coordinates and manages on-site media presence.

•    Research story ideas, opportunities to position hospital experts, and response to trend stories.

•    Organizes and manages media contact lists.

•    Manages the Hospital in the Media newsletter.

•    Manages special events requiring media outreach.

•    Collaborates with Standard Hospital & Clinics (SHC) and the Stanford University School of Medicine (SOM) communications offices to ensure that messaging and media outreach is consistent and mutually supportive.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university

Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

Licensure/Certification: None required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

•    Ability to write quickly, succinctly, accurately and with grammatical excellence.

•    Ability to communicate complex health information into everyday understanding is essential.

•    Ability to develop, write and "pitch" both long- and short-form content, stories, press releases, "expert" voices and more to multiple types of external media (print, broadcast, Web, bloggers, etc.).

•    Ability to manage response to high-pressure media deadlines and inquiries.

•    Knowledge of Public Information Officer duties.

•    Ability to prepare newsmakers with talking points, media training, coaching, and strategic messaging.

•    Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area

•    Knowledge and experience in New Media/Web/Social Media applications

•    Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job
