Job Summary

The SAFTeam Nurse Coordinator provides support to the Strengthening Alliances with Families Team (SAFTeam).  The SAFTeam assists care teams with management of disruptive patients and family members and is an important element of the Organization's approach to addressing workplace violence.  The Nurse Coordinator provides assessments and management of situations where a parent or other family member's behavior is impacting the ability of the care team to provide care safely. In addition, the Nurse Coordinator provides assessment and coordination of behavioral care for patients with developmental impairment or psychiatric conditions who are at risk for aggressive behavior.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

* Assesses patients at risk of aggressive behavior secondary to primary diagnosis to psychiatric disorders and autism spectrum or other developmental disorders and develops behavioral safety plans to reduce risk of patient and staff injury by reviewing charts, observing patientcare interactions, discussing issues with providers and family members.

* Reviews reports to determine if there are any new concerns regarding patients or their families.

* Participates in rounding with care teams with patients and/or families that have needs for behavioral interventions.

* Collaborates with care teams to ensure patients and families understand a unified message and a clear delivery of behavioral goals.

* Develops behavioral plans and strategies for patient care with the care team.

* Provides consultation to teams working with family member(s) whose behavior is disruptive to care. Potential interventions range from providing guidance to care teams regarding effective communication approaches in difficult situations, to direct interventions with family members who are displaying a range of behaviors that are disruptive.

* Collaborates with social workers, administrative nursing supervisors, psychiatry, and security services on implementation of safety plans for the management of disruptive and aggressive behavior in patients and/or family members.

* Provides education and training to Stanford Children's Health's team members on workplace violence, including training on de-escalation skills and management of disruptive behavior. 

* Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.

* Participates in quality improvement initiatives by being involved in various workplace improvement and safety committees.

* Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling.

* Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two (2) years of relevant work experience.

License/Certification: Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of California.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

* Ability to recognize and considers age-specific needs of patients.

* Ability to effectively communicate and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.

* Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.

* Knowledge of naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions.

* Ability to be culturally competent and clinically sensitive for treatment of families from diverse backgrounds with high levels of stress.

* Knowledge of functional assessment for treatment of patients displaying severe challenging behaviors.

* Ability to work closely with medical teams in a multidisciplinary approach.

* Ability to conduct functional behavioral assessments and design, implement and monitor behavior intervention plans.

* Ability to assist patients and their parents in acquiring academic, social, and adaptive life skills.
