The Fetal Therapy Nurse Specialist directly involved in the day to day needs of families who are referred to the Stanford Medicine Children's Health Fetal and Pregnancy Health Program for a fetal anomaly that may require an in-utero intervention or therapy.  The nurse supports the fetal center physicians' care to further the patient's understanding of their baby's disease process and coordinates the plan of care. The role is a nursing role and serves as the primary point of contact for the patient.  The Fetal Therapy Nurse will work closely with the Fetal Center co-directors, maternal-fetal medicine fetal therapy specialists, neonatologists, radiologists, pediatric subspecialists who provide prenatal consultation and care, perinatal genetic counselors and the FPHP coordinators. Coordination with the FPHP coordinators in planning prenatal visits and imaging; communication with referring physicians in cases that require in-utero intervention or therapy; obtain and update the medical and obstetric history; counseling and education of patients and families prior to the in-utero surgery; coordination of the in-utero surgery, communication and planning in concert with MFM, neonatology, and other OB and pediatric specialists, and follow up care following the in-utero surgery including ongoing pregnancy management, delivery planning (if indicated), and continuing coordination with neonatal and pediatric subspecialists. The Fetal Therapy Nurse will liase with social services in collaboration with other members of the FPHP team to address the needs of  families; act as a resource for information and coordination between prenatal and postnatal team members, ensuring referrals and plans made in fetal care are communicated to team involved in postnatal management; act as resource for transition of care of the infant and mother and follow-up care back to the referring physician in the community/other at time of discharge; acts as a resource for parents, outside physicians, and internal staff.

TRIAGE AND COORDINATION:

  • Attends and assists with in-utero fetal therapy procedures performed in the LPCH main ORs or labor and delivery ORs.  The RN will serve as a circulator to ensure the efficient execution of the case and a resource to other team members

  • Triages urgency of prenatal visits and help coordinate fetal scheduling in coordination with the FPHP coordinators and other team members.

  • Coordinates follow up care with referring OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine Services in collaboration with the FPHP coordinators.

  • The Fetal Therapy Nurse Specialist will attend pre-operative multidisciplinary provider planning meeting in preparation for upcoming and scheduled fetal cases. 

  • The Fetal Therapy Nurse Specialist will attend MFM and multidisciplinary patient appointments in conjunction with MFM for cases considering or planning for in utero intervention.

  • The Fetal Therapy Nurse Specialist will attend weekly FPHP team operational meetings, bimonthly multidisciplinary FPHP Fetal Case Conferences, and bimonthly MFM Fetal Management conferences.

  • Liaise with nursing leads in the LPCH main OR and labor and delivery ORs to maintain appropriate inventory of surgical instruments and routinely communicate.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION:

  • The Fetal Therapy Nurse Specialist will work with the directors, leadership, and other team members of the Fetal and Pregnancy Health Program to develop patient care algorithms for evaluation, management, and treatment of complex fetal cases being considered for fetal intervention

  • The Fetal Therapy Nurse Specialist will work with the program directors to develop appropriate, and specialty specific case operating room carts/instrumentation sets e.g. EXIT cart, fetal airway (with ENT service lead), NTD (with Neurosurgery lead).

  • Work with center providers and directors to develop case-specific guidelines, patient education materials, fetal case registry for internal QA and experience review as well as when necessary for external regulatory reporting to agencies including the FDA, NIH and NAFNET

  • Supports families with follow up information or questions in between scheduled visits in coordination and collaboration with FPHP coordinators, perinatal genetic counselors and other team members.


DELIVERY AND POSTNATAL EVENTS

  • Coordinates with OB/GYN, MFM, FPHP Neonatologist and NNPs, and other team members to understand delivery-to-neonatal care plan, and support as needed.

  • Communicates with FPHP Neonatologist and NNPs and other team members if changes are made intervention or delivery plan, OR location or schedule.

  • Serve as a point person for patient and family in communicating intervention and/or  delivery schedule and plans in collaboration with other FPHP team members.


SOCIAL NEEDS:

  • Liaises with MFM, FPHP coordinators and team, and Social Workers, assuring that support needs are met for patient and family.

  • Care coordination and actively participate in fetal surgeries for our Fetal Center families with a multidisciplinary team of MFM¿s and pediatric subspecialist

  • Primary contact for families and liaison between program directors and Physicians. 



PROGRAM EDUCATION

  • Participates in education and case-specific communications with our partner outreach sites.

  • Participates directly with the Fetal and Pregnancy Health Program in their weekly coordination meetings as representative of maternal-fetal intervention and therapy cases.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university, Master's preferred

Experience:  Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.

License/Certification: CA Registered Nurse (RN)

Current American Heart Association (AHA) Certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and NRP.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to integrate patient care with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team and provide direction or guidance to non-licensed personnel in assigned area of responsibility to ensure quality care.

  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

  • Knowledge of current theories, principles, practices, standards, emerging technologies, techniques and approaches in the nursing profession, and the health care system, and the responsibility and accountability for the outcome of practice.

  • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care in the area of assignment.

  • Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology; principles and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management; medications and drugs, common dosages, their physical and physiological effects, and possible adverse reactions.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $149,552.00 to $187,574.40
